Trail Report for February 2nd, 2012

With all the traffic our trails had this last weekend and a lack of WHITE GOLD falling from the sky, plus above average temperatures, the trails have taken a slight setback - open areas and road trails are thin (icy) to bare in spots. There are slushy areas on lake trails. Stay on marked trails on the lakes. Most wooded and shaded trails will still be in fair to good condition. With high temperatures above freezing until mid-next week and little to No snow in the near future,
trails will struggle to hold up!!!!

Please ride safe!

SPEED LIMIT

There is a nighttime 55 mph speed limit in effect this year on all public lakes and trails.

SAFETY CERTIFICATION

All snowmobilers are reminded that Wisconsin law now requires that everyone born after January 1, 1985 needs to have passed a safety certification course in order to ride on public trails and lakes unaccompanied.  This applies to residents and non-residents and there are no exceptions.  Persons under 16 years of age are required to attend a safety class in person.  Those 16 or older may attend a class or obtain safety certification via CD-ROM through the Wisconsin DNR.  Information on the CD-ROM can be obtained at www.dnr.wi.gov or 1-608-266-2141.

ATTENTION NON-RESIDENT SNOWMOBILERS

Snowmobiles bearing Wisconsin registration are not required to have a non-resident trail pass, even if the owner is from out of state. A 2 year Wisconsin registration is $30, compared to 2 trail passes at $35. Due to the formula used to transfer gas tax revenue to the state snowmobile fund, about twice as much money is generated with a 2 year registration as is with 2 trail passes. The state snowmobile fund is where the money comes from for grooming and trail maintenance. By having Wisconsin registration instead of a trail pass, you save $20/yr and contribute more money to the state fund.

It is perfectly legal to have Wisconsin registration on your snowmobile in addition to your home state's registration. You do not need a Wisconsin address; your home address can be used for a Wisconsin registration. Once you have a Wisconsin registration, it can be renewed online at the
DNR website. Wisconsin registration applications can be obtained at any DNR office, at any dealer who sells snowmobiles in Wisconsin, and at many dealers out of state near the Wisconsin border.
